28-30 October 2022
Day 1 Friday
We depart on Friday morning from Volos at 7:00 AM for Samarina, at an altitude of 1600m, the highest village in Greece and the Balkans.
We arrive, settle into our rooms, and prepare for our first hike, which will take us to the village of Distrato at an altitude of 1000m.
Starting our hike, we will need to cross the river that separates the two villages and move through a forest of pines and cedars.
Hiking time 3-3.5 hours
Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 2 Saturday
Early in the morning, after our rich breakfast, we pack the essentials and begin our hike that will lead us to the peaks of Mosia I and Mosia II, and of course, to Drakolimni of Mosia. The view from the peaks of Smolikas impresses even the most demanding, with the eye reaching from nearby Grammos all the way to Mount Olympus, if the atmosphere permits. Overnight stay at a hotel.
7 hours of hiking
Day 3 Sunday
Breakfast with a view of Gero-Smolikas, and it’s time to visit Drakolimni of Smolikas and, of course, its peak, the second highest after Mount Olympus, with an altitude of 2,637 meters. We head to the village of Pades and from there, with the help of a dirt road, we ascend to the last summer sheepfolds of the area. The hike, with several viewpoints towards Tymfi and Grammos, fills us with energy for our demanding trek. During the summer months, we enjoy a swim in Drakolimni, but in autumn, we settle for a break before continuing our ascent to the mountain’s summit.
The surrounding view is fantastic… To the north, the majestic ridge of Grammos stretches along the border with Albania, and lower down lies Voio. To the southwest, the lush Trapezitsa, a branch of Smolikas, and to the south, the imposing Gamilia, a true allure for every kind of mountaineer…
Return to the village, full of new experiences, and time to organize our next excursion.
